Production Supervisor

Location:         Cardiff

Job Type:        Full Time, Permanent

Shift Pattern:  Monday to Friday, 37 Hours per week

Job Purpose

To effectively supervise and execute the department operations, whilst ensuring deliverables are aligned to monthly goals and targets.


Responsible for supervising the assigned product ranges within the Production Department on a daily, weekly & monthly basis, whilst ensuring optimum resource utilisation and delivering products to an agreed monthly schedule.


Functions:


  • The use of human and material resources in order to facilitate the   manufacture of high quality medical devices.
  • To act as a key member of the Production team and work in an enthusiastic and ethical manner in planning resources and motivating employees.
  • To be part of any new product development or introduction and provide expertise and guidance in production layout and efficient product flow
  • To manage production employees in a fair manner and ensure the company policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to.
  • To continuously improve production productivity.
  • Ensure the production facility is kept as a clean and well organized area as befitting a medical device manufacturer.
  • To ensure production employees (direct & indirect) performance are reviewed and appropriate training given where necessary. 



Key Duties & Responsibilities:


Output


Produce product as required by the manufacturing plan.


  • Anticipate shortfalls in the plan and take appropriate measures to correct them, bringing all issues to the attention of the production manager.
  • Ensure product is manufactured to the correct specification as defined in the Production Build documentation and manufacturing instructions and product quality is never compromised
  • Continuous productivity improvement to agreed targets.

 

2.  Product Build Files (PBF)

 

  • Ensure the PBF’s are in good order and always fit for purpose.
  • Create and maintain production work in progress monitoring records on a daily basis to measure throughput of product highlighting and identifying any shortfalls and performance issues.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping across all areas of production.

 

 3.  Personnel

 

  • Organise the available production workforce and ensure optimum resource utilisation.
  • Maintain discipline within the Production environment.
  • Ensure the correct and consistent application of company rules and regulations are followed and maintained.
  • Implement and follow the disciplinary/grievance policies and procedures making sure all employees are treated consistently and follow them.
  • Carry out return to work interviews as necessary and monitor time, attendance and punctuality, feeding this information back to employees.
  • Monitor performance and carry out discussion forms where poor performance is identified.
  • Provide positive feedback to production operators where good performance is identified.
  • Highlight employees’ skills and shortfalls, raising any training requests as necessary.
  • Ensure trainings records and requests are raised, maintain and kept up to date.
  • Develop a multi-skilled, flexible and efficient workforce via coaching or mentoring programmes.
  • Encourage the workforce to take ownership to identify opportunities for improvement and feedback to the relevant departments/manager.
  • Carry out recruitment selection and on-boarding process ensuring the induction documentation of new employees is carried out, within the allocated time frame.
  • Carry out annual performance appraisals for all assigned production employees making sure they are completed within the allotted time frame. Ensuring the meeting is motivational, encouraging good practices and empowering behaviour. Identify training requirements are identified, recorded and actioned in line with SOP16.
  • Deliver any information or communication deemed relevant.
  • Responsible for own training and development, identifying courses to the Production Manager ensuring your personal growth and further progression. 

 

4.  Reporting

 

  • Daily reporting to the Production Manager on issues that are having a direct impact on production output.
  • Any personnel, resource, material and equipment issues as and when they arise.
  • Monthly reporting on back MPS, identifying all work in progress status.
  • Reporting any man management issues.
  • Ad hoc reporting as and when required.

 

5.  Other

 

  • Deputies for Production Manager during times of absence, reporting any information deemed necessary to the Manufacturing Director.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to Health and Safety regulation requirement.
  • Ensure production employees adhere to Health & Safety instructions following relevant policy at all times.
  • All Sop’s are followed where necessary.
  • Ensue all PPE is in good supply and good condition, making sure employees follow the guidelines.


6.  Quality System Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure the company Quality system/procedures are adhered to at all times.


Knowledge/Skills/Experience:


Essential


You should be trained in supervisory skills and have at least 3 years working experience as a supervisor.


  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience within a production environment.
  • Have and can demonstrate experience of managing a large team of people dealing with complex man management issues.
  • Experience of conducting disciplinary, grievance performance and annual appraisal meetings.
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft office systems, must include excel, word, PowerPoint and outlook.
  • Ability to write, report, present, in English language at all levels.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Must have a knowledge of health & safety.

 

Desirable


  • Knowledge of Quality systems as required in medical device manufacture.
  • Must have a knowledge of business impact on the environment.
  • A knowledge of MRP based systems as applied to batch manufacture.
  • Previous experience of identifying opportunities for improvement on the production process.
  • Previous experience of encouraging and developing workforce, identifying training needs for growth and development within the department.

Personal Qualities:


  • The ability to lead a large team of people to achieve targets and goals.
  • Must possess excellent communications skills and be able to clearly communicate at all levels.
  • Must have an excellent eye for details and accuracy.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing production requirements.

Special Features/Conditions:


  • Must reside within ease of travel to and from the Cardiff site.
  • Overtime, weekend & shift working will be required from time to time in line with business demand.
  • At end of month you will be required to make sure that all targets are completed prior to leaving work.
  • Prepared to attend courses to develop knowledge and skills applicable to a supervisory role.
